Section A paddle-in : Keewaydin dock is six deep with people along its entire length. There is a mass of people on the platform end of the dock. Another two rows of people line the shore. There is a still green canoe with a grandmother and grandfather watching the paddle-in. He remembers his paddle-ins in the 1940s and in 1950, today he has the honor of watching his grandson paddle-in with Section A. Other parents and families watched the paddle-in of their daughters and sons earlier in the day.

This is my first paddle-in and I am truly in awe as each section of Keewaydin’s sons and daughters approach the dock and end their summer's journey. They complete jobs before breaking into canoe wide smiles and running for hugs. Others have witnessed Section A paddle-ins many times. One grandfather paddled-in several times in the 1930s, he too has witnessed his grandson’s paddle-in. The first row is sitting at the edge of the dock. Each is leaning forward to gleam a better focus. The younger girls and boys paddled-in earlier in the day. They dangle their legs over the edge and chat as they wait for the canoes to appear.

Section A is the final section to paddle-in. The entire camp gathers at the dock to welcome them back to base camp.

There is total silence as each person focuses on the horizon at the canoes. There is stillness on the dock. At the docks edge a group of Section A mothers sit and hold binoculars to their faces. Each of the faces is streaming with tears. The father's faces are also tight with emotion as each stares forward at the canoes filled with sons of Keewaydin. It is a journey of great pride and emotion for each parent, staff, family member and friend who witnesses paddle-in.

For each person witnessing the paddle-in of Section A there is a very personal journey that we travel as we watch our sons return from their Hudson Bay trip. It is a journey which has taken place over many years of pride, joy, hard work and exuberance; of heartfelt thanks to all staff and guide for bringing our sons through their journey back safely to us and to Keewaydin. Perhaps more than one simple prayer of thanksgiving and grace is offered.

Sections D + B + 1 Paddle-in. : A thought about photos. Photos printed professionally last for over 100 years. In twenty five years you will still have the photos, even if they are in the back of your desk drawer waiting to be 'found'. In just a few years technology will move on to another median and the pixels from this website may no longer capture a photo. I have a floppy disk marked 'Family photos' in a desk drawer just to remind myself of how quickly technology is moving forward and 'old' technology is left behind.

I would be grateful if you could identity the 'sections' in these photo links.

Song 10th Anniv. morning paddle-in. : Congratulations to ALL! It was very exciting to watch Keewaydin's daughters paddle-in for Song's 10th paddle-in. These are photos from the morning paddle-ins. It was raining, but spirits were soring. Your daughters were very proud of themselves as they paddled-in. They were confident with the wisdom learned from hard work and the understanding that they had accomplished much this summer. I hope that they will think hard and consider returning to the shores of Temagami next summer.
